If your pup could speak, would she want a raincoat? El nino is coming to Los Angeles supposedly, so we are getting ready. It rained a few times this past week and my 6lb little princess Lucy did not like getting wet. But would she want a raincoat to keep her dry? I peered into her brown eyes for an answer. This one I found online is super cute, sunny yellow with dots and flowers. But it might be a little much for a small dog to end up looking like this.
I wish she would just tell me. So I went on an online field trip on Amazon.com to find out more about canine behaviors and came upon these 2 books.
Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell and Know by Alexandra Horowitz
In her years of study, she noticed that we humans are clueless when it comes to understanding what our dogs need. Dogs don’t sense the world the same way we do. Theirs is a world of smells. A rose is not a rose, it is just a plant, like any other.
The Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs by Patricia McConnell
Patricia talks about the similarities between canine and human interactions. What I found interesting were some interactions we humans might find positive, our pets thinks quite the opposite. For example, body language can be quite the giveaway over our tone. (It’s no wonder when I try and scold one of the pups for misbehaving, they don’t really get scared haha, the softie in me gives it all away).
Fascinating and insightful stuff, and after looking around at different books, I think I will pass on that rain coat for now, and allow her to pick out one the next time we go for a trip to the pet store together. At least I know she is a fan of our vegan collars 🙂 What are your thoughts about clothes for dogs? Leave us a comment below!
