October is breast cancer awareness month. Most of us have seen promotions and products with pink ribbons by now, as we head in to the 4th week of October. It is sad that statistics show that approximately 40,000 lose their battle to breast cancer each year.
Did you know dogs can get breast cancer too? Also known as mammary cancer, 25% of unspayed dogs will develop this type of cancer, according to the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. That is three times the risk in women! According to pet MD, it is because most of the dogs are unspayed.
Prevention is key: If you spay before the first cycle of heat, the likelihood your dog will develop mammary cancer greatly reduces.
We created the support the cure pet pendant a few years ago when my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and I wanted to find a way to support her. Today, she is in remission and we continue in our small way to help support this cause.
This month, our cancer charity is the canine cancer foundation. Join us in supporting the cure this month on our FB page and enter to win a Support the Cure tag for your pet. Winner will be randomly chosen and announced October 31st!
